A class students will learn programming unit in Visual Basic, and gain skills in Javascript and Flash action scripting to create interactivity in websites. New topics will include sound editing for music and/or special effects, and video editing. |

These courses focus on the development of drawing and
painting skills in a variety of media with an emphasis on image development, design and composition. Materials used will include collage and painting in watercolours, tempera and acrylics on canvas, drawing with pencil, conte, oil and chalk pastels and pen, ink |
and brush. Art
history research and sketchbook work are key elements in this program. At this level, students will develop personal projects and a portfolio for post-secondary application. |

A self-paced project-based course that takes you further into the world of design. This course suits students who enjoy design, Art, cartooning, illustrating, and writing. Upon completing this course you will be able to organize, plan, and complete a design, digital art piece, or a graphic novel/cartoon. Graphic design 12 is a great way to develop portfolio material for entrance into a Design or Art College. Approximately 30% of the course |
will involve advanced design concepts and tool learning and about 70% of the course will be independent or team related projects. Student developed design projects are strongly encouraged. Experimentation and exploration of new digital/traditional techniques and ideas will be stressed. |

| This course has three main goals:
1) Developing project management skills and knowledge by working on real projects in game design, film and TV, sound design, and graphic design 2) Gaining exposure to the digital media industry and digital media educational institutes 3) Learning about media in society. Students work in teams that solve various design problems such a creating a game level using the Source engine; creating posters, web sites, and brochures for |
the Academy, creating professional videos for various clients. You will learn how to generate and evaluate ideas; write design briefs, pitch your ideas; give constructive feedback, run efficient and effective meetings, and develop timelines and create and meet deadlines. Students will be expected to develop and follow roles and responsibilities that they have created for members of their teams. In the end, students will be prepared to solve most any design problem that is placed in front of them. To enrich their experience we will be taking field trips to sites of professionals such as EA Sports, CIS, Vancouver Film School, and Capilano University, to name a few. | ||||||||||||||||

| This is a self-directed and project-based course requiring a hands-on approach in which the student manages their time and resources to prepare a body of work for application to post-secondary art or design institution. Instructors from Digital Media and Visual Arts are available to provide the students with individual guidance, resources, and the curriculum necessary to produce a balanced and comprehensive portfolio. | The course will include career directions, researching art and design schools, new technique and skill building, portfolio development and packaging, and evaluation by peers and experts. Animation is a self-paced course that introduces you to the exciting and creative world of visual storytelling in the tradition of Disney, Pixar, and quality Japanese anime. This course suit students who enjoy animation, sketching/painting, and storytelling. Upon completing this course you will be able to plan and organize a script and storyboard and use animation principles to create a short animated story. Animation and visual storytelling skills will prepare you for a future in script writing, animation, graphic design, and game design. Photography 12 is a self paced course that introduces students, at a higher level, to digital SLR cameras and the art of viewing and capturing the world more carefully. You will learn to do fashion, portrait, and art photography with professional lights, equipment, and backgrounds. This course suits students who have a deeper interest in photography and Art and want to work with their camera at an intermediate level or higher. Upon completing this course you will be able to use: a Digital SLR camera to create powerful studio photographs as well as composing |
photos in the areas of close-up, street, photo-journalism, and landscape photography. Ultimately you will create many stunning images. Photography will prepare you for a future in Journalism, Graphic Design, and Art. Approximately 30% of the course will involve advanced photo composition and design concepts, lighting, and tool learning beyond Photography and Digital Imaging 11. About 70% of the course is project-based. |

In this course you will become proficient at using the Macromedia family of tools for website development: Dreamweaver for managing fi les, Fireworks for creating the graphical layout and adding user interactivity, and Flash for adding animated content. You will become familiar with and use web design concepts such as design, colour theory, typography, user navigation, and effective use of space. |
A major project will be developing a website and uploading it to an ftp server. Some students will do projects for real clients. You will work in a friendly, hands-on environment, and you will be graded on lesson and project work. |

This course focuses on combining writing skills and computer applications to make printed materials more attractive and readable. You will become profi cient at using Adobe InDesign for page layout, Photoshop for photo correction and enhancement, and Illustrator for creating graphical elements. You will have a choice between taking a journalistic or creative writing approach, and you will further develop your writing skills in that area. |
You will produce either a 12-page magazine complete with original articles, or a short graphic novel, both of which will be printed in colour. Evaluation will be based on project work and lessons. |

Students in North Vancouver are surrounded by one of the biggest game design centers in the world. This is a self-directed team-based course that requires students to be highly motivated. Game design is a team activity and leverages a multitude communication and technical skills and knowledge. The course involves game concept development, game history and theory, modeling, animation, rigging, and the use of a game engine using specific programs and a scripting language. In the course the students will work in teams and build assets and animations, and develop game levels and use scripting language. Students will learn the fundamental skills of Autodesk’s, industry standard 3D software, Maya, Mudbox, and Motionbuilder, to design and create video game art assets including custom props and characters.

Students will learn to create skeletons for their models which conform to Source® game engine specifications.The Source engine has been used for the development of the games Half Life, Counter Strike and Portal. Students will explore common practices and toolsets for 3D level creation while working “hands on” with Valve’s professional Hammer editor. Upon completing this course you will be able to plan and organize for game design and development, model characters and environments, rig and integrate animations into the Source engine environment, and create an interactive game experience. | ||||||||||||||||
